Description
Photo of a Cotton Mouth (aka Water Moccasin) in the pine straw. I decided to call this Christmas surprise because I was out on Christmas Day trying out the new lens Santa brought me. It is winter here in South Carolina. I had decided to cross over a little strip of land leading to a small island in the swamps in order to get some closer shot of the Northern Shoveler Ducks who visit us every winter. I got no more than 10 steps on to the island and something made me look down. To my surprise (and I began shaking) no more than 10 inches from my right leg was this wide awake Cotton Mouth; a very venomous snake. Needless to say, I slowly backed off, grabbed a few shots and left the island. I clearly was not thinking. Always be aware of your surrounding. I should have realized that even though it's winter, if the alligators were out, chances are the snakes are too. Yikes!
