Description
THE STAR OF THE SHOW....anyone that goes to Huntington Beach State Park affectionately knows this beautiful Great White Egret as Radar. Notice the band on his ankle and the little antenna sticking out from his back. Radar isn't a captive bird. He is 100% wild and a favorite of all the photographers in the area. The antenna is how he/she got it's name. After the Gulf oil spill, Radar was one of many birds who was captured and given a radio transmitter to keep track of how the oil spill is effecting birds health since. Although Radar remains here throughout the year and doesn't migrate, he does provide a wealth of information as his non-migration provides a important measure to compare to those birds that do migrate. So although Radar remains a home body his good health tells us others may not be doing as well that are exposed to the gulf coast. If you are ever here on a visit, stop by to see him. He is particularly handsome shown here in breeding plumage. The extra long feathers and bright green around the eye and upper bill signal it's time to breed.
